preSage (2013) 12′

for orchestra

3.3.3.3 – 4.3.3.1 – Timp – 4Perc – Harp – Pf/Cel – Strings

Commissioned by Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra with support from Arts Council Norway.

First performed August 28, 2013 in Oslo Konserthus, by Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vasily Petrenko.

preSage was commissioned by Oslo Philharmonic, to be performed at a concert also containing Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. I have therefore decided to establish a vague, but hopefully perceivable link to Stravinsky, although the outright references are few and far between. From the short interlude The Sage, I have derived a simple two-note rhythm and a string harmonic chord. These two elements make the basis for the rhythmic and harmonic structures throughout the piece.
