Inside Out (2010) 23′
for solo clarinet in Bb and Orchestra
Clarinet solo – 2.2.2.2 – 4.3.3.1 – Timp – 3Perc – Harp – Pf/Cel – Strings
The clarinet concerto “Inside Out” was composed in 2010 for Rolf Borch, who commissioned it with funding from the Norwegian Cultural Council. The title refers to the way the composer redefines the traditional role of the solo instrument in a concerto. Instead of standing out in front of the orchestra, the clarinet weaves itself into the orchestral texture, enhancing and highlighting existing themes with long melodic lines and fast runs through harmonic landscapes.
First performed March 17, 2011 in Bergen, by Rolf Borch (Clarinet) and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Juanjo Mena.
